About Andalucía. provincial fiestas. almeria fair

Just before the Almería Fair, the Mediterranean nights are held, a venue where different countries show their typical dances and customs.

As a tradition, the Almería Fair is also devoted to the Virgin, and more specifically to the ‘Virgen del Mar’, a different carving since the Virgin is small and dark skinned. The image is said to be a boat figurehead lost by a vessel which reached the coasts of Almería to become its Patron Saint.  The last Saturday of the fair week is the Patron Saint day and a flamenco mass and the typical floral offering is held.

The whole city fully enjoys the event, it is held at the end of August and like the Málaga fair, you can enjoy it also at mid day downtown, savouring the area typical drinks and tapas. The fairground has fantastic sea views and almost 200,000 square metres for your enjoyment.

La Alcazaba
La Alcazaba

A traditional character in Almería is the "gargantúa", a giant who goes in procession along the streets throwing sweets like rain over the children.

No doubt this is one more sign of the pleasant and agreeable Andalusian character; the fair is recommended to be experienced, and it is held every year at the end of August.
