About Andalucía. provincial fiestas. JAÉN

The origin of the ‘Virgen de la Capilla’ Fair dates back to 1430 when the Virgin was taken down to the city in the eve from the 10th to the 11th of June of that year.

This religious event has always been remembered in the day life of the Jaen citizens, and has been celebrated as a special day.

It was in the 20th century when the festivities became most important. After the Civil War, the neighbours of the San Ildefonso district met together with the aim of holding this fair. At the beginning this was a popular fair and a Rosary was recited and other religious events were held.

At present it is important to mention the floral offering to the ‘Virgen de la Capilla’ and the procession of the Virgin along the streets of the city as main religious events.

Apart from the above, the city council together with the visitors bureau organise events that change the city for a few days. Like in other Andalusian provinces, bullfights, cultural and sport events are held in Jaen as well.

The main spot to enjoy the fair is the San Ildefonso district.
