There are plenty of charming spots in the area that are well worth a visit. Although Torrox is mainly a coastal destination, its historical centre also has a special lure for people who are not just looking for sun, sea and sand.

Among others, we recommend the following attractions:

Old Centre

Traditional and charming: steep side streets, beautiful plazas and dazzling white houses decorated with flowers. Picturesque spots can be found on every corner. A highlight is the Plaza de la Constitición. Here can be found the local government building and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.

As mentioned previously, the town hall can be found on this plaza - making it the powerhouse of the district. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is worth a visit.

Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación

The church dates back to the beginning of the XVI Century and has undergone subsequent modifications. It was built on the site of an old Muslim temple. It is a baroque church with a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross. Its three naves are separated from each other by round arches. Of special interest is the square bell tower, topped off with a pyramid-shaped roof.

Hermitage and Convent of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves

This is the most important archaeological complex in the district. It is a two-story building with cloisters and an interior patio. It also has a church with a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross, with side chapels, presbytery and choir stalls.

San José Hospital

Nowadays only the façade of this XVIII Century building is preserved. It can be found on Avenida de Cómpeta.

Palacio de la Aduana or Casa de la Moneda (Customs House or Mint)

It rose to commercial splendour from the XVIII Century onwards.

San Roque Hermitage

This beautiful temple, with a single nave, apse and choir stands, was built in the XVI Century and is located in the centre of Torrox.

Old Wall and Castle Towers

This place is famous because Almanzor was born here. It can be found in the old centre of Torrox. Remains of the walls of the Torrox's Castillo Alto can be seen here - the castle was destroyed during the War of Independence. Of note is its Arab Turret.

Arab Turret

This building was constructed in the XII Century to protect the Castle and the Citadel. It has recently been refurbished by the town's local government.

Casa de la Hoya

A XIX Century palace that currently houses the Torrox Law Courts. It is well-known because King Alfonso XII stayed here when he visited the town after the devastating earthquake of 1884.

Calaceite Tower

Around 2 miles from Torrox, built in the XV Century and used to protect the town. The tower is 130 feet high and has recently been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.

Caviclum Archaeological Site

Located close to the lighthouse in El Morche, a few miles from Torrox. It dates back to I a.C and was discovered in 1905 by Tomás García Ruiz, the lighthouse keeper. At the site can be found dwellings, hot baths, kilns for ceramics, a necropolis and a building where a classic Roman sauce known as "Garum" was produced. Utensils, mosaics and sculptures have also been found in the immediate area.
